Modern on the Water: The Sleek St. Clair
In the neighbourhoods surrounding our design studio, it's not unusual to come across properties with a distinct set of characteristics: narrow, elongated, and with the gift of a waterfront view. The Sleek St. Clair is a testament to our creative process as we took on the challenge of crafting a modern, slender abode for a unique family with a remarkable vision.
The property's constraints were immediately apparent – a mere 48 feet in width but a staggering 570 feet in depth. This left us with limited width but an abundance of depth to explore, and we eagerly embraced the opportunity.
Garage Challenges: Merging Form and Function
Our initial hurdle was to seamlessly integrate a spacious two-car garage without overshadowing the house's front facade. Deliberate planning factored in the vehicles' turning radius and the creative use of the garage's angled front. The outcome was a set of angled garage doors that minimized the visual impact of the garage, allowing the main living area to take center stage. The garage's single-story height, in contrast to the two-story house, became a design asset, distinguishing the residence.
Indoor-Outdoor Synergy
An important design concept was the fusion of interior and exterior spaces on both levels, flanking the house's ends. This approach provided opportunities for the family to enjoy the outdoors while reading, painting, and socializing in any climate. The main entrance featured a captivating cantilevered floor, leading to an unassuming entry. Only after navigating the entry and turning a corner did the breathtaking waterfront views reveal themselves. This strategic placement ensured that the awe-inspiring vista was reserved for those invited into the home.
Second-Story Innovation
The second story followed a similar strategy, with a spacious hallway bisecting the floorplan. This clever layout allowed for abundant natural light and excellent ventilation at both ends of the hallway. One side extended to an inviting outdoor patio, while the other hosted an oversized bench seat for quiet contemplation. The main bedroom suite, occupying one side of the second floor, offered a private sanctuary with waterfront views, direct laundry room access, and a complete separation from the other bedrooms. The opposite side of the hallway boasted three equally sized bedrooms, each with its en suite and walk-in closets.

Towering gracefully on its site, the Sleek St. Clair stands as a testament to innovative design and a harmonious connection to the surrounding landscape and water. Most importantly, it's a reflection of the unique needs and desires of the family it shelters. The Sleek St. Clair, with its thoughtful spatial planning and remarkable design, is more than just a house; it's a modern architectural solution for a family’s unique lifestyle.
